Obituary

Jane Frances Boyd Thompson, age 76, passed away Friday, April 22, 2022, at the home of her daughter in Rincon following several years of declining health.  Jane was born on July 18, 1945, the third child of John and Loretta (Betty) Boyd of Rincon.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, William Lee (Cap’n) Thompson, her parents, and her younger brother, Richard Allen Boyd.

She leaves behind her loving caregiver and daughter, Michele Hannon Piper and her husband, Keith; her daughters Lauren Thompson Killoran (Kevin) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Linda Thompson Niles (Brad) of Charlotte, NC.; and her four grandchildren, Sam and Harry Niles and Kate and Aiden Killoran.

She is also survived by her siblings, Johnny Boyd (Nancy); Loretta Hinely (Charles); Carolyn Kessler (Joe) and Shirley Winters; and sister-in-law, Marsha Boyd. She was blessed to have a large extended family that included 12 nieces and nephews and their children.

Jane was a 1963 graduate of Effingham County High School and spent the next several decades working with people. She was a “people person” having honed the art of conversation while working in her Daddy’s service station from the age of 12. Those skills opened doors for her in many different vocations. She worked in relocation services, promoted Savannah attractions, sold commercial real estate and volunteered her time helping parents better communicate with their children.

Jane became a mid-life, born-again Christian and professed her faith through her actions and words. She was a member of Compassion Christian Church and attended until her health declined. She studied her Bible and could argue interpretations with the best. She loved the old Baptist hymns and had a beautiful alto voice. Jane loved her family and was happiest when she was “holding court” at the family dinner table and solving all the world’s problems. She would have made a passionate politician.

After she and Lee moved to Colonel’s Island, Jane discovered she had a talent for writing and illustrating inspirational poetry that she often framed and gifted to friends and family. Her love for both the seashore and the mountains was evident in her poems. She was surprised to learn that her poems were popular in little seaside tourist shops. She and Lee traveled from Florida through the Carolinas selling her poems and making many friends along the way.

When Lee passed away, she came full circle and moved back to Rincon and eventually moved in with her daughter, Michele, and her husband, Keith; and, with the help of Hospice and her special caregiver, Mrs. Eva Goldwire, she was able to make a peaceful transition to her heavenly home.

It was Jane’s wish to be cremated, as was Lee. Carlson-Riggs Funeral Home in Guyton is performing the service. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date.
