Sally Marie Maupay Johnson was born in Philadelphia on August 22, 1936 to Ross Maupay and Nora Wilkerson Maupay, and from the very beginning she brought a spirited personality, a quick wit, and a spark that never dimmed. She lived life on her own terms, loved with her whole heart, and had a remarkable ability to make people laugh just when they needed it most.
She married a Navy man named Cecil, who, despite being named Cecil, insisted on calling himself John. Sally took that in stride, just as she did so many of life's little surprises. Together they built a life filled with love, resilience, and a family that became her greatest joy. Her love for her family was unwavering.
Sally was funny, feisty, a bit annoying, and wonderfully authentic. She did not like confrontation, and she enjoyed being the center of attention. She said things that became known as “Sally-isms”, such as stating that the charcoal in Walmart was “probably wherever they put it,” and toward the end, “I just want to live my life ‘til I die.” She wasn’t the best housekeeper, but she could make a mean pot of mashed potatoes and the most delicious fried chicken.
She also had a lifelong soft spot for Elvis Presley. Whether his music was playing on the radio or one of his movies was on television, Elvis could always bring a smile to her face. It's comforting to imagine that somewhere beyond this life, she's finally gotten the front-row seat she deserved.
Sally was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cecil; her cherished eldest son, Craig; and all twelve of her siblings. While their loss left an immeasurable void over the years, there is comfort in imagining the joyful reunion they now share.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her son, Dwayne Johnson (Judy); her daughter, Dawn Johnson Parrish (Ken); her granddaughters, Brandi Sanders (John), Heather Sikes, and Sarah Willi (Steven); and her treasured great-grandsons, Ryan, Payne, and Creed. They will carry forward her stories, her laughter, her resilience, and the love she gave so freely.
If Sally could write the ending herself, she would probably wave everyone away with her hand, tell everyone not to make too much of a fuss, share a laugh, play an Elvis song, and keep taking care of one another. That would suit her perfectly.
Though she has left this world, the joy she brought to it remains. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and celebrated every time her family gathers to tell one of her stories, laugh until they cry, or hear the opening notes of an Elvis classic.
Rest easy in Heaven, Sally. Give Cecil and Craig our love, catch up with your brothers and sisters, and if you happen to run into Elvis, tell him you've waited a long time for that concert.
