Joseph "Joe" Hammond

Joseph “Joe” Quincy Hammond, 89, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at his home in Springfield, GA.

Joe was born in Mullins, SC on October 25, 1930 to Martin Durham and Roxie Cleo Buffkin Hammond.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1948, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. After proudly serving his country for twenty-six years he retired in 1974. He married the love of his life on June 22, 1956 in Jacksonville, NC. Following his retirement, he served twenty years in the Civil Service.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather “big papa”, brother, and friend. He was very generous and loved to help others in any way he could. Including being an inspiration to his nephew Lewis Warren. Some of his favorite things included his family, fishing, playing cards, lottery tickets and don’t forget the ice cream.

Preceded in death by his loving wife Betty Hammond; parents Martin Durham and Roxie Cleo Buffkin Hammond; five brothers, Aaron, Franklin, Houston, Jimmy, and Martin Hammond; four sisters, Darcus Ann Bullard, Frankie Jewel Goins, Katheryn Mayers, and Peggy Jean Johnson; brother-in-law Jim Warren; and son-in-law’s Heyward Tindal, and Donald J. Stone (USMC).

He leaves to cherish his memories; his two daughters, Melanie (Bobby) Dean of Springfield, GA, Debbie (Melvin) Smith of Grays, SC; brother, Elery Hammond of Loris, SC; sister, Bobbie Faye King of Georgetown, SC; two sister-in-law’s, Shirley Ann Hammond of Loris, SC, Ethel Hammond of Pleasant View, SC; three grandchildren, Adam (Amy) Dean of Pooler, GA, Heather (Ramie) Antee of Guyton, GA, Lori Rahn of Ellabell, GA; seven great grandchildren, Olivia and Reese Dean, Zachary and Zoe Antee, Dillon and Lindy Rahn and Chloe Ijames; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be laid to rest with Military Honors on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at the Hammond Family Cemetery in Finklea, SC.
