It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Decatur "Sonny" Bainbridge Owens, who departed this life on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Born to Decatur B. Owen, Sr. and Ronellar Owens on Sunday, February 20, 1944, in the charming city of Savannah, Georgia, Sonny spent 82 cherished years with us, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.
A resident of Bloomingdale, GA, Sonny dedicated his life to serving his country and community. He was a devoted civil servant with the United States Air Force and Army where he served honorably, received many rewards for his exceptional performance for Kitchen and equipment mechanic. His commitment to the military was matched by his passions outside of work; he was a valued member and trainer in the National Wrestling Association and generously shared his guidance as a Boy Scout leader. Sonny's love for his feathered friends was well known; he had a special affection for his beloved bird, Jessie.
Sonny was known as a workaholic to some, but to many more, he was a devoted teacher, mentor, and friend. His birds brought him joy, and his conversations with them painted bright moments into his days. His steadfast dedication to life, work, and community serves as an enduring testament to a life well-lived.
Sonny was preceded in death by his former wife, Gloria Owens, he is also preceded by his four sisters and parents, Decatur B. Owen, Sr. and Ronellar Owens, whose memories he cherished dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 13 years, Vickie Owens. Together, they built a family strengthened by love; daughters Denise Demming (Ed) and Donna Wint; bonus children Angela and Matt Taylor, James (Jena) Price; precious grandchildren Chance and Alexis and bonus grandchildren Ryan, James, Peytan, Trystan, Owen, and Parker. Sonny's life was enriched by the friendship of Phil Deloach, whom he considered a special friend and family in spirit.
Special thanks to Gentiva for their love, care and support. We want to especially thank Ms. Carol who was Sonny’s favorite.
