Charles Edward Massey, III (Ed), 75, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah after an extensive illness and complications from kidney disease.
Ed was born August 10, 1942 to Charlie E. Massey, Jr. and Dorothy Wiley Massey. He was born in Screven County and lived there until his father returned from WWII. The family then relocated to Savannah where he attended public school at Massie School, Commercial Jr. High School and was a member of the Savannah High School Class of 1959. There she met his wife of 58 years, Gloria (Dodie), who he always referred to as his blue eyed, pretty-legged blue jay. They loved to dance and he spoke often of the skill they possessed when they were doing 'The Shag". He always believed that as a couple nobody could dance better than the two of them. Ed was a salesman. He would never take 'no' for an answer until you told him 'no' at least 13 times. He and his wife operated several businesses before he became a Sales Executive for Colorado Boxed Beef. He retired from there in 2009. After he retired they bought a motor home and traveled many places across the southwest and the eastern seaboard. His most unforgettable adventure was driving thru Harlem, NY in the Winnebago, during rush hour traffic. He was a talented story-teller and most of it was probably true.
He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church in Guyton where he served as a deacon and as Sunday School secretary for many years. He had recently been attending Guyton Christian Church.
Ed was preceded in death by his son, C. Edward Massey IV, his parents Charlie and Dorothy Massey, his daughter, Robin Diane Massey and his wife, Gloria Delaine Priester Massey. He is survived by his daughter Teri (Elisa) Massey; grandchildren Ariana JaLynn Hope Massey, Danny James Massey, Jesse Stewart Massey and Elijah Edward Massey, all of Guyton; his brother Robbie (Paula) Massey of Richmond Hill; brother-in-law LeHue Bennett of Savannah; special friends Tarver & Carolyn Edwards and Lamar & Teresa Kicklighter; many cousins, nieces & nephews and family friends.
The family will receive visitors at Riggs Funeral Home on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Providence Baptist Church in Guyton.
